C H A R A C T E R I N F O
Character Name: Izumo Kamiki
Fandom: Ao no Exorcist
Age/Gender: 15/female
Canon Point: Chapter 37.5
History: Here. The arc that follows the Impure King does not feature her having any significant role in it, though I guess it's notable that she went on a "date" with Shima...!?

Personality:

At a glance, Izumo Kamiki is an arrogant girl with exceptional talent to back up that haughty attitude of hers. Her motivations for becoming an exorcist are unclear, but whatever they are, combined with her natural talent, they drive her to become an achiever of sorts. She does not smile often, and thus, she comes off as very aloof towards others who are not her friends. The figures of that are not too difficult to count - she only has one friend in the beginning, after all. Maybe it's precisely because of this lack of experience in friends that she is not the most amiable of people.

It was something from way back, to be precise. As a child, she was called "weird" by many of her classmates after she gained the ability to see demons. Everyone teased and ostracized her for it, save for one girl, Paku. Paku was the first to teach Izumo this and break the insurmountable wall she put around herself by showing Izumo that she didn't care about what other people thought of her. In return, Paku was the only girl Izumo showed her kinder, happier side to. Izumo and Paku would be friends even when Izumo starts attending True Cross Academy. Many of Izumo's ideas about friendship and her personality can be discerned from her relationship with Paku alone.

Because she has spent so much time with Paku as her only friend for so long, Izumo does not really know how to get along with others and finds it a little difficult to work in a group. Since Paku dropped out, Izumo has always been seen sitting a distance away from Bon and the others. This is not only because she does not get along with Bon from time to time, but she also can't easily insert herself into a group. In addition, people are always the ones who have to take the initiative with her. Shima is always eager to get her number, and Izumo refuses him every time. Shiemi was particularly insistent on befriending her, prompting Izumo to call her weird and shameless. A girl who is not afraid to get what she wants - a girl completely different from the closed-off Izumo, in other terms. The times she speaks are often when she is provoked by Bon, whom she thinks is a guy just looking for attention. Her abrasive nature and sharp words cause the two to clash heads.

But why was she initially provoked by Bon? Simple. Izumo describes herself as "an insufferable girl who hates losing." When faced with a challenger, she covers her insecurities up with excuses. She could not memorize the same Biblical lines Bon could, so she tells him that memorizing doesn't have anything to do with academic ability. She will not tolerate anyone worrying about her or looking down on her because of her weaknesses. She is unbearable and almost absolutely impossible to work with, yet it is her will that won't allow her to settle for failure that makes her shine. When demons attacked the group during the exorcist exams, she helped Bon out to prove her worth to them and, more importantly, herself.

Aside from her frustrations with being imperfect, her lonely nature is what drives her. She works hard so that she doesn't have to depend on anyone, and she excels at it, too. In the exorcist exam, she was able to pass a test that was meant for a team by herself. Not only does she have no desire to be dependent, but she does not mind being the one depended on. Time and again, she tells her friend Paku that she will protect her no matter how reluctant Paku is, and she tells Shiemi to stand back and let her fight, because Shiemi is weak. However, she soon learns the value of working together. "Friends help each other," is what she told Shiemi after crying to Izumo about being unreliable. In any case, it is clear that Izumo values her friends very much. She was frustrated with herself when she was not able to help, Paku, then her only friend when she was in danger. She was also the first to side with Rin after learning of his demon heritage despite everyone being uncomfortable around the son of the demon who killed their families. Izumo didn't see the need make a big deal out of it and saw him as the person he was, not the demons he had a connection to. As Paku taught her, only one thing mattered: that you were her friend, and that was all there was to it.

Speaking of walls, Izumo has demonstrated her sharp tongue throughout the series, but even she has a softer side. For the lack of a better term, she is what you call a tsundere. This can be chalked up to her getting embarrassed easily. Whenever Rin compliments her, she gets shy and comes up with excuses. When Kuro appears in front of her when no one is around, she melts into a puddle of goo. She puts up a front to cover up her weaknesses, (i.e. poor social skills, poor cooking skills...) but when those walls unexpectedly come down, she shows everyone that she is not the mean girl they once used to know.

She and Bon still pick fights with each other, though.

Special Abilities:

In canon, Exorcists are ranked and classes into different roles depending on their abilities. Izumo is an Esquire, the lowest rank, training to become a Tamer. She is naturally gifted in this role, as her spiritual fortitude comes from her shrine maiden lineage. She can summon two byakko named Mike and Uke, and with her knowledge of their skills, she demonstrates how she is able to use them for various tasks in the manga. In the exorcist exam and during the Impure King arc, she was able carry heavy objects by using the children of her familiars. However, they disappear once she loses her concentration. In another instance, when faced with Rin's blue flames, she commands one of her byakko to pour sacred wine over him. The sacred wine is equivalent to holy water, so it effectively puts the flames out.

How did your character die? She fell from a tree while trying to save a cat. The fall broke her neck. A simple death, but one you wouldn't expect from a girl who seems selfish.

So?

Is this Heaven, Purgatory, or some kind of joke? Ah, it must be funny to you, huh? Fooling a young girl like this. You're are despicable. Whatever you've created, I'm sure it's not Hell. If it is, you've got to be kidding me. Just what was that, then? [ She's only turned on the audio function, but if someone was right in front of her, they could see her bite her lip and clench her fists. ] What on earth have we been fighting all this time!?

... Anyway, I refuse to believe it. I won't die until I...

[ Huh? ]

I...

[ Why did she become an Exorcist again?

What did she want to do again?

Dammit. ]

Well, I don't need to tell you any of that! If there's anyone who hasn't fallen for their tricks, do let me know I'm not the only sane one around here.

Here are the answers for the next exam.

I'm only doing this because it keeps us here. Don't think that I'll tolerate this sort of behavior all the time. Honestly, you're all so shameless! I hope you're happy with the life choices you've made.

Afterlife choices, anyway.

P.S. I'm not doing your homework next time. You know who you are, so stop asking and do it yourself!
[ only do ask her, because she's secretly looking for company ]

SAMPLE 3

... Spacing out and tripping over nothing... What is wrong with me? I'm so out of it today...

... Death? No, that doesn't bother me at all. That's because it, it never happened. Not the way I wanted it to.

It's not that I can't accept my death. I just -- refuse to accept it! Giving in to these fools is the last thing I want to do. After all my effort to stay, I'll be disappearing as if nothing ever happened? After fighting so hard against these drones that make each and every day so miserable? Don't play with me like that. I... I refuse to accept an end like that.

I won't lose to this place.

It's not very long, but here's another one for your consideration!

Third Person:

The crowds of students - or NPCs, as some liked to call them - passed in and out of the cafeteria, found tables, separated into groups to get their meals, and met up again to eat together. Talk with each other. Spend time with each other. How nice that sounds! ... Not that Izumo is jealous. In fact, she would rather not have her friends here at all. Wouldn't that mean they failed to achieve their dreams?

Izumo furrows her eyebrows and dug her spoon into the rice. She's already failed to achieve hers, but that goes unsaid. Not a second even passes before she tries to distract her thoughts toward something else. Like those crowds, yes. She's never eaten at such a large table with friends. At least, not in a cafeteria. It was always her and Paku. Her and Paku, together. What would she and Paku be doing right now? Izumo's mind begins to wander as she imagines it.

They wouldn't be here, for starters. They would be outside, under the cool shade of a tree on a nice sunny day. They would share bento boxes, and they would exchange meals if they liked what the other had. Their conversation would last for what seemed to be like hours and hours until the bell rang and signaled the start of their next period.

If only she could bring those days back.

"Ah!"

Izumo got carried away there. Quickly, she scooped up her food to eat it before it gets too cold. However, as she brought her spoon close to her mouth, someone familiar appeared nearby. They seem lost, but only because they had no idea where to sit. They were... someone like her. A person who, from then until now, has always been alone. Well, she can't just sit at a table big enough for two.

"It's fine."

Izumo spoke loud enough for them to hear. She can't believe the words coming out of her mouth, but hey. She actually owes him one from when they were alive.

"Seeing you stand like that is pretty pathetic. You can sit here as long as you're not a bother."

Did you read the rules and F.A.Q.? yes!
